Mondzain.

Here’s a selection of press quotes – links to full reviews can be found the Press page.

The Times: ★★★★ “This exhaustively researched and elegantly edited documentary explores the cinematic legacy of the former Yugoslavia.”

Dazed and Confused: A bizarre account of Yugoslavia’s film industry with rare archive footage in which Hitchcock, Sofia Loren and Orson Welles flit past, appearing in ‘super productions’ commissioned by Yugoslavian dictator and film-obsessive Marshal Tito. Actors, producers, secret police and Tito’s personal projectionist describe eccentric, fact-meets-fiction stories – including using the country’s entire armed forces for celluloid battle scenes, and Tito’s hiring of Richard Burton to play himself in a biopic. A week of screenings kick off tonight at the ICA.

The Guardian: “Mila Turajlic’s brash and diverting – if slightly disorganised – documentary illustrates how closely Yugoslavian cinema was tied to the Tito regime.”

The Observer: “A sad but fascinating story” – Philip French

Time Out London: “a fascinating tale…”

From The Little White Lies website: “The breadth of Turajlic’s research is palpably vast, and she has secured fascinating interviews with directors and actors who were a major part of this flourishing industry. Not only are their testimonies revealing and passionate, but they locations in which they are filmed – grubby apartments that overflow with dog-eared memorabilia and rusting film cans, the country’s now derelict film archive – reinforce what a massive deal cinema was back then.”

Total Film: “Mila Turajlić’s doc resurrects an era where Hollywood stars appeared in propaganda pics and military service meant becoming an extra…”

An in-depth interview by Michael Brooke in the December issue of Sight&Sound. Michael Brooke calls the film entertaining, surprising and extraordinary.

Un état du monde… et du cinema!

Paris, Forum des images, 1-9 December 2012

Cinema Komunisto will be screening at the Forum des Images in Paris on Sunday, December 9, at 17:30h, as part of a week-long selection of ex-Yugoslav films. Mila Turajlic and Iva Plemic Divjak will be present for a Q&A after the screening.

On December 8 at 18:00h there will be a round table discussion on “Cinemas in ex-Yugoslavia”: a shared destiny between Yugo-nostalgia and the EU?”

The screening and round table are part of a focus on post-Yugoslav cinema.

We are excited to announce the cinema release of Cinema Komunisto in the UK, with our distributor Shane O’Sullivan of E2 Films!

The UK release kicks off with a week of screenings at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London on Friday, November 23rd, followed by a Q&A with the director

From the ICA program:

Many movie fans won’t know that the former Yugoslavia once had a film industry whose resources rivalled those of France and Italy, and which attracted likes of Hitchcock, Welles and Loren. That was during the reign of dictator Marshal Tito, a serious film buff who watched a film with dinner most nights and created a world-class studio complex, Avala Films, to turn his own celluloid fantasies into, well, celluloid fantasies. Cinema Komunisto is an astonishing account of Tito’s obsession: he literally used his entire armed forces to make his war movies look authentic, and made a biopic of himself with Richard Burton in the leading role. But the film is also the story of Tito’s country, cleverly told through clips from his movies. Don’t expect an objective history lesson – but you will be completely fascinated.

ICA screening times are below, and more information about booking can be found on their website.

We are honored to announce that clips from Cinema Komunisto have been selected by curators of the Museum of Yugoslav History for inclusion in their seminal exhibition YUGOSLAVIA: FROM THE BEGINNING TO THE END.

The exhibition opens on December 1st 2012, and “provides the basis for a future permanent exhibition at the Museum of Yugoslav History that will be put together after receiving feedback from experts, academia and the wider public.”

In a message released before the opening, the creative team behind the exhibition says:

“Our ambition in putting the exhibition together was not encyclopedic – to cover all the aspects of the social system nor to present all available data. The aim of the exhibition is to create a space which i na modern, attractive and objective way will introduce visitors to one of the most intersting and most controversial state-building experiments of the 20th century. The idea is not a chronological portrayal of the most important events, but an analysis of important phenomena and elements that marked the country and the society on the territory which for over 70 years came under the name Yugoslavia.

This exhibition is a great challenge to us and we see it as a presentation of our research which we now wish to share with visitors. The research is not over, this is one of many stories of Yugoslavia and for us a point on the road towards a future permanent exhibition on the history of Yugoslavia. What do you think of it? We want to hear your opinions!”

The exhibition runs from December 1st to March 3, 2013. Go see it!
